Op het eerste gezicht lijken deze concepten eenvoudig, maar wat betekenen ze eigenlijk? Wat betekent het om kunstenaar te zijn? Hoe wordt een kunstenaar succesvol? Wat is succes überhaupt? Tja, wat is kunst eigenlijk? Hoe vind je je weg in de kunstscène? Wat is de rol van de academische wereld?
In de komende SEEN zullen Cecilia Fox en Nicole Kuiper de controverses omtrent deze concepten, evenals vele andere, ontleden. De twee kunstenaars zullen hun krachten bundelen om wat licht te brengen in de onzekerheid die elke kunstliefhebber koestert, maar nooit vertelt.
De kunstpraktijk van Nicole Kuiper (1998) richt zich op het verkennen van normen en systemen in relatie tot zichzelf en haar sociaal-politieke context. Met als doel haar eigen definities opnieuw vorm te geven, gebruikt Kuiper videocollages om na te denken over onderwerpen als kunst, feminisme en arbeid. Geïnspireerd door haar eigen ervaringen, reclame-esthetiek en haar fascinatie voor absurdistische filosofie, transformeren haar werken zware onderwerpen tot luchtige met als doel gesprekken open te breken en te bewijzen dat het leven niet in steen gebeiteld is. Een citaat van Nicole: “Als kunstenaar en mens hebben we de macht om ons verhaal te herschrijven, waarom zouden we ‘dingen’ een hogere waarheid laten lijken?”
De kunstpraktijk van Cecilia Fox (1994) omarmt amateur-esthetiek en doe-het-zelf-technologieën en infiltreert verscheidende media zoals comedy, boeken, muziekvideo’s en meer. Haar werk integreert op speelse wijze wetenschappelijke onderzoeksmethoden, marketingstrategieën en popculturele referenties. Haar artistieke wortels liggen diep in de performancekunst en het schrijven. Terwijl ze tegenstrijdige elementen combineert, toont haar werk kwetsbaarheid naast cynisme en autobiografie verweven met fictie, terwijl het op naadloze wijze het onaangename met het zelfbewuste laat samensmelten en het spontane met het voorbedachte. In haar werk onderzoekt ze haar eigen identiteit en zelfpresentatie als ongeschoolde, mentaal gestoorde vrouwelijke kunstenaar.

At first glance these concepts seem straightforward, but what do they really mean? What does it really mean to be an artist? How does an artist become successful? What is even success? Well, what is even art? How do you find your way into the art scene? What is the role of the academia?
In the upcoming SEEN, Cecilia Fox and Nicole Kuiper, will dissect the controversies of these concepts, and many more. The two artists will join forces to bring some light into the uncertainty every art-lover holds but never tells.
Nicole Kuiper’s (1998) art practice focuses on the exploration of norms, and systems in relation to herself and her sociopolitical context. With the goal to rebuild her own definitions, Kuiper uses video collages to reflect on topics such as art, feminism, and labour. Inspired by her own experiences, advertisement aesthetics, and her fascination with absurdist philosophy, her works transform heavy topics to light-hearted with the aim to open discussions, and proof that life is not set in stone. Quoting Nicole, ‘As an artist, and human being, we have the power to rewrite our narrative, why make ‘things’ seem like a higher truth?’.
Cecilia Fox’s (1994) art practice embraces amateur aesthetics and DIY technologies, infiltrating various mediums like comedy, books, music videos, and more. Her work playfully incorporates scientific research methods, marketing strategies, and pop cultural references. Her artistic roots lie deep in performance art and writing. While combining contradictory elements, her work showcases vulnerability alongside cynicism and autobiography intertwined with fiction as it seamlessly blends the obnoxious with the self-conscious, spontaneous with scripted. Throughout her work, she explores her own identity and self-presentation as an uneducated mentally ill female artist.
